Flying Wedge® HT-Series
Piston Pump Metering & Mixing Systems

Accurate and repeatable system performance with no unnecessary
sophistication make the HT-Series shot dispensing systems both
affordable and dependable. Driven by a common, linear, adjustable-
ratio wedge mechanism, the piston pumps on these systems are
specifically designed to handle 2 to 4-component abrasive-filled and
unfilled cast urethane, epoxy, polyester and cast nylon formulations.
They are used in open-casting, vacuum-casting (into molds potted
inside our custom-designed vacuum chambers,) low-pressure injection,
VARTM (Vacuum-Assisted RTM) and closed-mold RTM resin injection
applications, where mixed-material output pressures range from
0 to 600 PSI.

Metering pump sizes are selected to match your ratio and output requirements. Accurate
ratio settings are made by selecting the proper angle of the adjustable B component wedge
and locking it down. When the footswitch is depressed, the wedge moves forward, displacing
linear (on-ratio) streams of A and B component materials to the static (motionless) or
dynamic (motor-driven) mixer. (Outputs: 1 to 35 lbs/min) (Ratios: 1:1 to 1:100)

On the charge cycle, constant positive material pressure from the tanks drives the pistons out
of their respective cylinders and leans both pistons up against the wedge. This material pressure
from the tanks is created by nitrogen over-pressure or mechanical feed pumps submerged in
the material or mounted under the tanks. Also on the charge cycle, the wedge is drawn back
independent of the movement of the pistons, so the pistons are never pulled out of their respective
cylinders. This eliminates both air and liquid resin cavitation inside the cylinders.

All compartments and heater assemblies have removable slide-out panels. Heaters are
ceramic-enclosed infrared type. The wedge and piston clevis guides are mounted on linear
ball-bearing slides for long service life. Component injectors and ratio-taking ports are located
at the mixer.

Main Control Console and PLC

Depending on the HT machine’s configuration, the PLC and LCD Operator-Interface Touchscreen provide simple user presets for shot-size, output-rate, central temperature control, dynamic mixer speed and the mixer’s gel-time alarm timer.Electronic vacuum and pressure sensors can be located on the supply tanks and discharge lines to insure air-free resin dispensing and consistent preset injection pressure to your molds.

Piston Metering Pump

Piston Pumps
Unfilled formulations are processed, and when formulations include abrasive aluminum oxide, silica sand or glass filler in concentrations to 80% by volume, APT’s blind-rodpiston pumps handle them with ease. They provide true positive-displacement with zero pump-slippage and zero air and liquid cavitation for superior ratio, bubble-free dispensing and shot- to-shot volume accuracy.

Adjustable Wedge Drive with A & B Component Pumps

Infinite-Ratio Adjustable Wedge
The lower resin wedge is fixed and delivers 100-parts of resin. The upper hardener wedge pivots at the tip, above the lower wedge. You infinitely adjust and lock-down the hardener wedge at a preset angle. This shortens or lengthens the stroke of the hardener piston and presets the hardener on-ratio. As the wedge moves back and forth making partial short strokes or full strokes, the on-ratio hardener and resin are delivered simultaneously through the dynamic or static mixer. The end of each piston rides on ball bearings against the angled sides of the wedge. Plus, linear ball-bearing slides provide in-line support under the lower wedge and under the piston clevis guides for long-term, trouble-free, in-line operation.

Piston Drive or Linear Servomotor for the Wedge
A simple air-driven piston, an air-driven piston equipped with LVDT or a linear servomotor-driven piston can be provided to drive the wedge. The simple are piston includes a travel limit switch for presetting the mixed material shot-size. The LVDT equipped air-driven piston allows you to digitally preset the mixed material shot-size at the main touch-screen interface. The servomotor drive allows you to digitally preset both shot-size and output rate at the touchscreen for superior control of mixed material displacement into your molds.
